I Can Do Anything
Part of the fun of getting older is being able to do all the fun stuff in life: dating, driving, watching scary movies by yourself. Learn how to use -ebil today to brag about what a big boy or girl you are.
The "can" suffix (ebil).

What is right:
'doğum günün kutlu olsun'
or
'doğum günü kutlu olsun'
I think this is wrong:
'doğum gün kutlu olsun'

But all can be found everywhere.
Also: 'yeni yıl(ın)(ız) kutlu olsun'

Can someone please explain the correct rules for this?

I think this confirms something I've wondered about - the use of the question suffix "mi"; in this dialog the phrase "ne
yapacaksın?" is used, which is understood from context and tone to be a question, but would this also be "ne yapacakMIsin"?

So, "mi" is actually not a suffix. It's a word on it's own. You are on the right track with "yapacak mısın?" - "will he do?" (Here, the question word mı is suffixed with -sın).

However, in the case of "ne yapacaksın," the question word is actually absent because the question is wrapped up in the word "ne" ("what"). Since you are posing the question with "ne," you don't need to use "mi." It would be the same with "kim," like in "Kim yapacak?" - "Who will do?"

Does that make sense? Basically, you only need to indicate the question once. In this case, "ne" is your question word, so you don't need "mi."

Got it! So would "ne yapacak mısın?" be actually redundant - as in, grammatically wrong - or just unnecessary?

Justin
Yeah, as in grammatically wrong. Just trying to offer a little method to the madness ;-)

Merhaba,
I have a question about this lesson 30:

oyna-mak /-i = to play
would form like this:
oyna-bilirm = I can play, But it seems to be wrong, when I read your language points because you put in a -y-.
Isn't it? - there is in my oppinion no need for a buffer-y- after the verb-stam "oyna....(mak)"= to go on with the suffix "- bilir...".

Why do you tell in the language points, that there is a need to use a buffer-y- after a verb-stam with a vowel?
You tell us for oyna-mak:
oyna-y-a-bilir-im = I can play; there is first a buffer-a, than -y-
for
ağlamak /-e is it : ağla-y-a-bilir-im = I can cry.
But:
You can say correctly:
yapa-bilir-im = I can make ... yap-mak, there is a buffer-a-
or
ala-bilir-im = I can take ..... al-mak, there is a buffer-a-

Merhaba Eva!

I think you are a little confused. The suffix is -ebil and -abil. There's no such thing as a buffer 'a'.

And yes, oynabilirim is absolutely wrong. You have to put a buffer y between the stem and -ebil. The breakdown of a typical word looks like:

uyu + y + abil + ir + im = uyuyabilirim = I can sleep

Follow up if something in particular is confusing you :)

Sorry about that @öğrenci! There might be a problem, but I'd need to see what you submitted to check. Feel free to paste your answer here and I'll take a look.

Merhaba Justin,
Is it really necessary to include "türkçe" in the sentence (Review last question)? "Evet, konuşabilirim" is not enough?

Merhaba Maciek! Yep, that's a perfectly acceptable response. I'll add it to the list of accepted answers :)
