Lesson 108intermediate Turkish Intermediate
Only as a Friend
Today we take our relationship with -dir out of the friend zone and into something a little more intimate. Oh, and we call your grammar book a dirty liar.
Using -dir for certainty and uncertainty.

Çok teşekkür ederim. It's becoming sort of a sport to see who can spot our stupid typos the quickest. :)

"Might have went" is actually not a thing (as I just learned). Where I grew up, people said it all the time - but you're right that "gone" is the past participle and is the grammatically correct choice.

Merhabalar! After doing this lesson, I happened to listen to Bülent Ortaçgil's "Eylül Akşamı" -- a song I like very much -- and I suddenly realized that it is filled with this -dir that you are talking about. Haklıyım mı? Most of these instances seem to be the uncertainty variety of -dir, because he is saying perhaps this happened, perhaps that happened. But tell me what you think. ... Here is the first stanza, with my feeble attempt to translate the lines.

Hiçbir neden yokken, ya da biz bilmezken -- While there was no reason at all, or one we know,
Tepemiz atmış ve konuşmuşuzdur -- We lost our tempers and spoke.
Onca neden varken ve tam sırası gelmişken -- While there were so many reasons and while they apparently came at exactly the right time,
Hiçbirşey yapmamış ve susmuşuzdur -- We did nothing at all and remained silent.
Aynı anda aynı sessiz geceye doğru -- At the same moment, as the same silent night fell,
İçim sıkılıyor demişizdir -- We said, "My soul is bored."
Aynı sabaha uyanırken kim bilir -- While waking toward morning, who knows,
Aynı düşü görmüşüzdür -- Perhaps we had the same dream.
Olamaz mı? olabilir -- Couldn't it be? It could.
Onca yıl, sen burada -- For so many years, you are here.
Onca yıl, ben burada -- For so many years, I am here.
Yollarımız hiç kesişmemiş -- Our paths don't seem to have crossed at all.
Şu eylül akşamı dışında -- Except for that September evening.

Hi there. I have a question. What is the difference between predictions made with or without -dir? For example:

Belki oradadır.
and
Belki orada.

As far as I know, both uses are correct.

Yep, both are perfectly fine.

If you were to just say "oradadır" by itself can mean (as described in the lesson), "maybe" or "definitely" it's over there. When you add "belki," then it removes the ambiguity and -dir is definitely serving it's uncertain role.

How about when -dir is added to date and times?

25 yıldır gitar çalıyorum
I have been playing guitar for 25 years (and still am)

3 aydır Türkçe öğreniyorum
I have been learning Turkish for 3 months (and still am)

2 haftadır görüşmedik
we did not meet for 2 weeks

Yep, good point! There's no obvious connection between that -dir and this one, so we've treated it as an entirely different suffix (as do most Turkish grammar texts).
