What are you doing?
Lesson 2beginner Turkish Beginner
What are you doing?
There's no time like the present - so it's a good thing we're talking about present tense today. Listen in and find out how to tell someone what's happening now.
The present-continuous tense (iyor).

At tab review this question is being asked:
Translate: You (plural) are watching? (izlemek)
My answer is not accepted as being right:
izliyorsunuz

The last one I was mistaken. I am sorry.
So I should have used a mi form:-)

how can I fınd correct answers?
May 18, 2013
Debra
Great site but a reveal would be good except agree with all of above izliyorsunuz is correct but is not accepted.
This is hindering my decision to pay fee after free week trial. After I have attempted several I would like a reveal, in the event there is an error or for my own progress seeing the correct response from which i can learn.
Site is awesome apart from this failing!

Tesnim, the mi, mı, mü, mu (to which personal endings are added depending upon tense being used) is merely a question marker where a question word (what, when, how, why etc) has not been used. Think of it in terms of a sentence switch around.
He is coming.
Is he coming? This requires the mi.
when is he coming?
Ne zaman o geliyor? mi not required as ne zaman/when is asked.

Hope this helps in some small way and its accurate.

For the last question, if we decided to go with "gelmiyor" followed by the question word, wouldn't it be "mu" instead of "mı"?
Dec 04, 2014
Miia
in the dialog part: Meşgul musun?
Meşgulum

shouldn't it be actually Meşgul müsün? and Meşgulüm instead, as this is an exception and Arabic rooted word?

Nice page! I like the podcast and the speaking part very much. What supposed to be fun, is however mostly frustrating: I didn't understand one single word...

I'm glad the speakers in the podcast don't use quite difficult English because I'm Dutch. But so far everything is clear! Çok teşekkür!

I would like to know if you have covered the topic of which vowels to use when constructing the mu mi *questions*
I don't understand what vowel we are making the harmony to when using this question participle?

Thank you.
Feb 18, 2015
Justin
Thanks @Jessie!

@Öğrenci - check out our detailed lesson on vowel harmony:

https://turkishteatime.com/lesson/43/

The mi question article just matches according to the normal rules with the word that becomes before it. Let me know if you have any specific confusion. :)

Then shouldn't it be "yapmıyorlar mı" instead of "yapılorlar mu"?

Hi again,
"ödev yapıyorum" in the Dialogue. Isn't it necessary to ad "-im" (my homework)? ödevim.
Thanx
Apr 11, 2017
Justin
You could - but then the meaning changes slightly to "I'm doing my homework." It's perfectly fine to just say "I'm doing homework."
Apr 11, 2017
Maciek
OK, thanx
